Scan Me!
What are QR Codes?
They were originally created for manufacturing companies in order to help track various parts throughout the process. The image you see above and as part of this blog is an example of a QR code.
They are very useful when utilized properly, but unfortunately bad people always try to utilize anything useful or convenient for nefarious purposes.
What harm can they do?
The quick answer is that the QR code can link to a bad website that either installs malicious software to your phone or tricks you into entering personal information.
QR codes have started to become a lot more ubiquitous in recent years. Think of the last time you went to a normal sit-down restaurant; chances are they had QR code that would show their menu.
How to protect yourself?
Below are some steps on how to mitigate the risks of scanning a QR Code:
Verify the source of the QR Code.
Use a QR Code Scanner that can preview the URL before opening it.
This means downloading a QR Code reader outside of the built-in one.
Think before scanning one in a public place or from an unknown source.
It’s all too easy for a bad person to change out a QR Code in a public location
Keep your device’s security software up to date.
